How to Wash FR and Hi-Vis Workwear Without Destroying It (2026)

Fabric softener does not merely reduce flame resistance. The residue coats the fibre and can act as fuel if the garment ignites, which turns protective clothing into the opposite of what it was bought for. One wash with softener can also significantly damage the reflective performance of hi-vis tape.

These are the two garment types where laundering is a safety procedure rather than housekeeping. Improper washing can void a garment's certification, and neither failure is visible: an FR shirt that has lost its treatment looks exactly like one that has not.

The four things that destroy FR clothing

Arc-rated and flame-resistant garments are protective equipment, and their performance is tied directly to how they are laundered.

Chlorine bleach. The properties that break down stains also attack the FR treatment. Testing by an arc flash laboratory found that in soft water, chlorine bleach reacted and disabled the FR treatment somewhere between 50 and 100 washes, and hard water made the outcome worse. Bleach can be present in ordinary detergents as well as added separately, so read the detergent label rather than only the garment label.

Hydrogen peroxide and oxygen bleach. Guidance differs here. Some industrial laundering instructions permit oxygen bleach where necessary; others say peroxide must be avoided alongside chlorine. Where the manufacturer does not explicitly permit it, do not use it.

Fabric softener and starch. These coat the fibre, masking FR performance, and can serve as fuel in the event of ignition. This applies regardless of the fabric, and it includes dryer sheets.

Excessive heat. High wash temperatures and hot drying accelerate degradation of chemical treatments. Industrial guidance caps water temperature around 60°C, while some manufacturers specify considerably lower. Contamination is a hazard the fabric cannot fix

This is the point that gets lost in arguments about detergent.

Flammable soils and contaminants must be completely removed during the wash. A garment soaked in oil, grease, solvent or fuel is a fire hazard whatever its fabric does, because the contaminant burns even if the cloth self-extinguishes. The FR rating describes the fabric, not what is on it.

For heavy grease and oil, home laundering is often not enough, and an industrial FR laundry service is the right answer. That is worth knowing before you hand a crew a set of coveralls and assume domestic washing will keep them compliant.

The same logic rules out accelerants near FR garments. Hairspray, fuel, solvent-based cleaners and similar products leave flammable residue on clothing that is supposed to self-extinguish.

Wash FR garments separately from household laundry. Mixing them risks transferring softener residue and contaminants from other clothing, which reintroduces exactly the problem you were avoiding.

If softener gets used by mistake

It happens, usually at home rather than at a laundry, and the correct response is not to shrug.

Do not wear the garment in a hazard area. Rewash it promptly with a mild liquid detergent and no additives to strip the flammable residue, then return it to service.

The reason this matters is that the failure is silent. Nothing about the garment looks or feels different, and the worker has no way of knowing the treatment has been masked until the day it is tested by an incident.

Hi-vis tape is made of glass beads, and denim destroys it

Retroreflective tape works because of microscopic glass beads bonded to its surface, which is why it throws light back toward a driver's headlights rather than scattering it.

Those beads abrade off. Washing hi-vis garments alongside items with a rough finish, work jeans being the classic offender, physically wears the beads away in the drum. The tape still looks like tape afterward and returns considerably less light.

Two free habits fix most of it. Wash hi-vis garments inside out, which puts the tape against the garment rather than against the drum and other items. And wash them separately from denim and heavy canvas.

Softener is as damaging here as it is on FR fabric, for a different reason: a single wash with fabric softener can significantly reduce the reflective ability of the tape. Bleach is out for the same reason it is out on FR garments.

Heat matters too. Tumble dry on low and remove garments promptly, and keep an iron away from the tape entirely, since the backing and the beads will not survive direct contact.

The standard expects the garment to survive laundering

This is not an informal recommendation. CSA Z96, currently Z96:22 and listed by the Standards Council of Canada as a National Standard of Canada, includes test methods specifically to confirm that a minimum level of visibility is maintained when apparel is subjected to ongoing care procedures.

In other words, the standard assumes garments will be washed and sets a floor for what must survive that. It also means a garment laundered outside the manufacturer's stated parameters has been taken outside the conditions its certification was based on.

Keep a record of care instructions for the different garments in your facility. Crews accumulate gear from several manufacturers, and consistent laundering across a mixed inventory is only possible if someone has written down what each item needs.

Treated or inherent, and how long yours lasts

Two kinds of FR fabric exist and they age completely differently, which most wearers do not know about their own clothing.

Inherent FR fabrics are made from fibres that resist flame by their nature. Their protection is a property of the fibre and effectively lasts the life of the garment.

Treated FR fabrics are conventional fibres, usually cotton or cotton blends, given a durable chemical treatment. Industry guidance commonly puts these at roughly 50 to 100 washes when care instructions are followed strictly, and far fewer when they are not.

That difference decides your replacement planning. A treated garment washed twice a week is approaching the end of its protective life within a year, while an inherent one is not. Find out which you own before budgeting.

Either way, inspect garments rather than trusting a count. Look for thinning, holes, worn areas, lifting or cracked reflective tape, and contamination that will not wash out. A practical routine for a crew

Read the care label first, and read it before the first wash rather than after a problem. Where garments came from different suppliers, expect different instructions.

Sort properly: FR separate from everything, hi-vis separate from denim and canvas, and hi-vis turned inside out. Use a mild liquid detergent with no bleach, no peroxide, no softener and no starch.

Wash warm rather than hot, and follow the label where it specifies a maximum. Tumble dry on low and take garments out promptly rather than letting them bake.

Launder after each shift where garments are soiled or sweaty, rather than storing them dirty. Stored contamination sets into the fabric and can transfer to other clothing.
