Snow removal crews work the worst conditions of the year, at night, beside live traffic, often alone. The hazard list is longer than the weather: struck-by risk on roadways, slips on the surface you are there to clear, cold stress, snow blower entanglement, carbon monoxide from idling equipment, and fatigue from storm shifts that run past sixteen hours.

Most guidance available online is written around American winter weather regulation. The Canadian requirements are provincial, and one of them catches contractors out repeatedly: roadside night work generally calls for Class 3 high-visibility apparel, and most snow crews are wearing Class 2.

The hi-vis class most snow crews get wrong

A standard vest is Class 2: background material across the torso with striping in a harness pattern. Class 3 adds retroreflective banding on the arms and legs, which outlines the human form so a driver recognizes a person rather than a bright shape.

Snow removal is close to the worst-case scenario that distinction exists for. Reduced visibility from falling and blowing snow, darkness, drivers with poor traction and long stopping distances, and a worker on foot beside a moving lane. British Columbia's regulation specifies Class 3 for traffic control persons, and the same logic applies to anyone working on foot in a roadway.

There is a practical route that most suppliers never explain. A Class 2 torso garment worn with reflective arm bands and ankle bands can achieve a Class 3 configuration, because the bands supply the limb banding Class 2 lacks. Traction on the surface you are clearing

Slips and falls are the defining injury of this trade, and the irony is structural: the crew is walking on the hazard they were hired to remove, before they have removed it.

An outsole compound that grips wet concrete can do very little on packed snow or black ice. Rubber stiffens as temperature drops, and a stiff compound has less grip. Winter-rated compounds stay pliable in cold, which is where the difference comes from rather than from tread depth alone. Match insulation to the actual exposure rather than the coldest imaginable night. An over-insulated boot causes sweating, and wet feet lose insulation value dramatically. The equipment hazards nobody plans for

Three mechanical hazards account for a disproportionate share of serious snow removal injuries, and all three are preventable by procedure rather than equipment.

Snow blower jams. Lacerations and amputations happen when workers clear a jammed chute or auger improperly. The mechanism is stored energy: the impeller is under tension even with the engine off, and it releases when the obstruction moves. Shut down, wait, and use a clearing tool rather than a hand, every time.

That changes what the first aid provision has to look like. Documentation is the contractor's protection

This one is specific to snow contracting and it is a business risk rather than a safety one, though the two are linked.

Slip-and-fall claims against snow removal contractors often arrive months or years after the event. The defence is records: when crews arrived, what was done, what materials were applied, and when they left. Poor or nonexistent logging is a common shortcoming, and inconsistent recording across sites and operators is nearly as bad as none.

Timestamped photographs before and after service have become the practical standard, and smartphones make it cheap. Systematic logging with timestamps and images is one of the most effective tools a contractor has when a claim surfaces long after anyone's memory is reliable.

Have contracts reviewed before signing, since hold-harmless clauses and waivers of subrogation shift risk in ways that are not obvious.
