How to Choose Work Pants: Fabric, Knees and Fit for Canadian Trades (2026)

Work trousers fail in four predictable places: the crotch, the knees, the pocket edges and the heel hems. Everything worth paying for addresses one of those. A gusseted crotch stops blowouts when you squat, double-layer knees survive concrete, bartacked pockets survive a loaded belt, and reinforced kick plates stop the hem fraying against your boots.

The detail most people never check is knee pad pocket height. A pad that sits below the kneecap protects nothing, and you cannot tell where it sits by looking down while standing up. Kneel on the shop floor before you buy.

Duck canvas, ripstop or poly-cotton

Three fabric families cover almost everything, and they trade the same three properties against each other: abrasion resistance, weight and drying time.

Cotton duck canvas is the traditional choice and it is exceptionally tough against abrasion. The costs are stiffness, heat and slow drying. For framing, demolition and rough material handling, where the fabric is constantly dragging across surfaces, the weight is buying you something real. In a wet Canadian spring, slow drying is a genuine drawback.

Ripstop is woven with a reinforcing grid so that once a tear starts it stops spreading rather than running the length of the leg. It is lighter and breathes better than duck. Choose it if you snag on rebar, sheet metal edges and fasteners more than you abrade against concrete.

Poly-cotton blends sit between the two, adding stain resistance and durability with less weight. They are the sensible default for mixed work.

Fabric weight is the other axis. Around 8.5 ounces is a common lightweight working figure, while 10 ounces and up is noticeably more robust and noticeably hotter. Buy for the season you work hardest in rather than the one you are shopping in.

Where trousers actually tear

Reinforcement is not spread evenly across a garment, and that is deliberate. Durability lives where the failures happen.

The crotch is the most common blowout, and the fix is a gusset: a diamond-shaped extra panel that gives fabric somewhere to go when you squat, kneel or climb into a truck. Without it the seam takes the whole load. On heavy daily use, crotch blowout tends to arrive within a few years even on good trousers.

Pocket edges fail from tools rather than fabric. Bartacking, which is a dense stitch cluster at stress points, is what keeps a pocket mouth intact under a loaded belt and a tape measure clip.

Knee pad pockets, and the mistake everyone makes

Trousers with knee pad pockets are the better system for anyone who kneels regularly, because they position the pad by cut rather than by strap tension. That removes the circulation problem caused by straps across the back of the knee, which is the reason most workers loosen straps until the pad slides down the shin.

But the pocket has to put the pad in the right place, and this is where it goes wrong. Pockets are frequently oversized relative to standard inserts, which lets the pad settle low. A pad sitting below the kneecap is protecting your shin while your knee takes the load.

Test it properly. Put the pad in, kneel down on a hard floor, and feel where the pad actually sits. Standing in front of a mirror tells you nothing, because the fabric moves several centimetres when the knee bends.

Two features solve it. Two-tier pockets let you set the pad at the correct height for your leg length. Bottom-loading pockets keep the pad from working upward and out during a shift of repeated kneeling.

Hi-vis trousers have to meet the standard themselves

Here is the Canadian requirement that consumer buying guides never mention, because they are not written for regulated worksites.

There is no Canadian standard governing ordinary work trousers. There is one governing high-visibility apparel, and if your work requires conspicuity, hi-vis trousers must meet CSA Z96 in their own right rather than borrowing compliance from the vest above them.

The current edition is Z96:22, listed by the Standards Council of Canada as a National Standard of Canada. That edition added a Class 2 requirement for retroreflective striping around each leg on bib-style overalls, so garments built to an older edition may not carry it.

Two practical consequences. Check the class, the level and the edition on the label rather than the presence of tape. And be careful about hemming: shortening a hi-vis trouser leg can remove striping and change what the garment is certified as. Fit is a safety question, not a comfort one

Consumer guides push relaxed and roomy fits, and for most trades that is fine. Around rotating machinery it is not.

Loose fabric near augers, drills, shafts and conveyors is an entanglement hazard, and the trouser leg is the classic catch point. Where you work around rotating equipment, a closer cut through the leg and a hem that does not flap is a control rather than a style preference.

The other fit detail worth checking is the boot interface. A boot cuff, or simply a leg cut to sit over the boot, keeps debris, sparks and slurry from running down inside the shaft. Tucking trousers into boots does the opposite and is the mechanism behind a lot of ankle burns and irritation on concrete and masonry work.

Rise matters more than people expect for anyone who kneels or crouches. A higher back rise keeps the waistband where it belongs when you bend, which is a comfort issue and also a coverage one.

Trousers, bibs or coveralls

Trousers are the default for most trades because they are the least garment that does the job, and less garment means less heat and more movement.

Making them last

Concrete and masonry dust is the quiet killer. It works into the weave and abrades the fabric from the inside every time you move, which is why trousers worn on concrete wear out faster than the surface contact alone explains. Shaking them out and washing regularly is a durability measure, not just a hygiene one.

Rotate pairs. A trouser that dries fully between shifts lasts considerably longer than one worn damp, and rotation also spreads the abrasion across two garments rather than concentrating it.

Repair early. A small tear in ripstop stops spreading by design, but a small tear in duck canvas does not, and the cost of a patch is a fraction of a replacement. Check the gusset and knee seams when you wash them.
