The symbol on the side of a CSA work boot tells you exactly which protections it carries. A green triangle means Grade 1 toe protection plus a puncture-resistant sole. A yellow triangle means Grade 2 toe protection plus a puncture-resistant sole. The other marks cover electrical hazards, metatarsal guards and chainsaw protection. The mark is a specification, not a quality rating.

Getting this wrong has consequences. A worker sent home from a site for the wrong footwear loses a shift, and an employer who specifies the wrong mark has a gap in their hazard assessment. What do the symbols on CSA work boots mean?

Each symbol is a printed or moulded patch identifying a specific tested protection. Under CSA Z195 the shape and colour of the patch both carry meaning, so a triangle and a rectangle in the same colour are not the same certification. Boots can carry more than one mark, and the 2014 edition of the standard introduced combination labels for footwear with several protections.

The CCOHS guidance on safety footwear is direct about how to use these marks: assess the materials handled, the risk of objects falling onto or striking the feet, and anything that might roll over them, then select footwear with the proper rating for that hazard.

One structural rule ties the table together. All footwear except conductive and static dissipative types must have protective toecaps fitted, so an electrical or metatarsal mark almost always appears alongside a toe grade rather than instead of one.

Green triangle or yellow triangle: what is the difference?

Impact rating. A green triangle certifies a Grade 1 toe cap tested to 125 joules, while a yellow triangle certifies a Grade 2 toe cap tested to 90 joules. Both include a puncture-resistant sole. Green triangle is the more protective of the two and is what most Canadian construction and heavy industrial sites specify by default.

The puncture-resistant sole in both grades is a plate rated to resist a load of at least 1,200 newtons. That is the component protecting you from a nail through the sole, and it is the reason a green or yellow triangle boot behaves differently on a framing site than a plain safety shoe does.

The toe cap material is a separate question from the grade. Steel and composite caps can both meet Grade 1, and the choice between them comes down to weight, cold transfer and whether your site has metal detection. What does the blue rectangle mean?

A blue rectangle certifies Grade 1 toe protection with no puncture-resistant sole. The toe cap performs identically to a green triangle boot. What it lacks is the plate protecting the underside of your foot, which makes it suitable for controlled floors and unsuitable anywhere sharp debris is present.

This is the mark workers most often get caught out by. A blue rectangle boot is genuinely CSA certified and genuinely has a Grade 1 toe, so it looks compliant at a glance. On a site that specifies puncture protection, it is not. Read the shape, not just the presence of a mark.

What does the white rectangle with the orange omega mean?

It certifies electric shock resistant soles and heels, tested at manufacture to withstand 18,000 volts with leakage no greater than 1 milliamp over 60 seconds. The omega is the symbol for ohms, the unit of electrical resistance. This protection degrades with wear, moisture and sole damage, so it is not a permanent property of the boot.

Several Canadian retail sites describe this mark as a white triangle. Others call it a white square. It is a white rectangle. This matters beyond pedantry: a listing that misdescribes the shape is a listing whose specifications you should not rely on when your protection from a live conductor is the thing being described.

SD, SD+ and the red C: static dissipative versus conductive

These two look similar on a label and do opposite jobs. Static dissipative footwear, marked with a yellow rectangle carrying a green SD, bleeds electrostatic charge away in a controlled, resisted way. Conductive footwear, marked with a red rectangle carrying a white C, deliberately conducts charge to ground with minimal resistance and offers no protection from live conductors.

The 2014 revision of the standard added a second static dissipative category, marked SD+ and described as super static dissipative, for people working with electronics and sensitive instruments. The same revision added specific labels for metatarsal guards and allowed combination multi-patch labels on footwear carrying several protections.

Conductive footwear is also one of only two categories exempt from the requirement for protective toecaps, alongside static dissipative. If you are issued conductive boots, confirm separately whether your hazard assessment also calls for toe protection, because the conductive mark does not imply it.

Metatarsal, chainsaw and combination labels

A dark grey rectangle carrying a white M certifies metatarsal protection: a guard covering the top of the foot between the toes and the ankle. Toe protection is required on all metatarsal protective footwear, so this mark always appears alongside a toe grade. A white rectangle with a green fir tree certifies chainsaw protection for forestry and tree care work.

CCOHS advises using metatarsal protection wherever there is potential for injury to the top of the foot, which in practice means foundries, heavy fabrication, and anywhere loads are moved above foot height. One limit is worth knowing. CSA Z195 covers protective footwear as manufactured and explicitly does not address over-the-shoe toe protectors, slip-on toe caps, overshoes, attachable metatarsal guards, anti-slip devices or protective inserts, because these are not considered integral to the footwear. A strap-on met guard does not make a boot a metatarsal-certified boot.

Slip resistance is marked differently

Slip resistance is covered by CSA Z195 but is not one of the coloured hazard patches. The standard sets requirements for slip-resisting footwear with or without other protective features, which means traction is certified separately rather than being implied by a green or yellow triangle.

This trips people up because slips and falls are among the most common workplace injuries, and workers reasonably assume a fully certified boot has been tested for grip. It may have been, but the toe and puncture marks do not tell you that. Check the product specification for slip resistance explicitly.

How to read a boot tag and spot a bad listing

Look for the physical patch on the boot, side-stitched or heat-sealed, rather than a claim in a description. Certification applies to the footwear as manufactured, and a steel toe with no CSA patch is not certified footwear regardless of what the listing says. Then check the shape and colour of the patch against the table above.

Three signals that a listing is unreliable. First, it describes the omega mark as a triangle or a square. On that last point, the standard is currently published by CSA Group as CSA Z195:14, reaffirmed in 2025. Many retail pages still cite the 2019 reaffirmation. It is a small detail that tells you how recently a supplier checked their own reference material.

Context for why any of this exists: CSA Group reports that after the Ontario construction industry provided CSA-approved protective footwear and required its use, the frequency of foot injuries in that sector fell by 60 percent between 1968 and 1984.
